WASHINGTON — Two weeks after Pfizer Inc. agreed to pay $1.6 billion in exchange rates for its Lipitor drug, the world’s biggest discount drug, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration will begin analyzing the discount drug and approving it on April 24, 2014.
In addition, Pfizer Inc. will begin selling the drug in its U. and European markets, the FDA said. The drug, which was developed by Pfizer, is already a blockbuster and will be approved in the U. by the Food and Drug Administration.
The discount drug, which costs about $4 a pill, is widely available and easy to purchase. Pfizer has long been a big customer of discount drug companies. “You don’t have to buy something every day,” says Michael Lechleiter, vice president of corporate communications for Pfizer. “We are a leader in the pharmaceutical industry, but we’re also an early adopter of a discount drug and the first to bring it to market.”
As part of the discount drug’s marketing campaign, Pfizer Inc. will use the drug as a marketing opportunity to sell it in Europe, the U. and Canada. The drug is expected to sell at $2.5 to $3 a pill, or about $2.25 to $3.50 a pill. The drug will cost about $1.75 a pill.
The discount drug is sold as an over-the-counter drug, called Lipitor. The discount drug is a generic version of Lipitor, which costs about $4 a pill. But Pfizer will pay out-of-pocket for Lipitor, and the drug is free at the pharmacy.

Pfizer said the drug will be available in the U. and European markets in August 2014 and the U. market for the drug in October 2014.

Pfizer also said it would make a decision to sell the drug in other countries for about $4 to $5 a pill.
Lechleiter says he has been following the company’s progress on Lipitor. “I’ve had patients come back to us asking about a different medication,” he said.
Lechleiter says that while Pfizer will continue to market the drug, it will not sell it in its U. market.
“We’re going to be taking a look at how we’re going to develop a product that will offer patients the most competitive pricing and availability,” he said. “The next step is to bring a generic version to market.”
The FDA also is reviewing whether the drug should be approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
